I have been holding on to this one for a while. This was taken the night before my "Aurora Australis" and "Midnight Rainbow" images, and was the very first time I had captured an Aurora Australis display.

Thank you very much Bert :D Been meaning to ask: How did the eclipse go. You were going to go to it, right?

Hi Greg, thanks for asking! Yes, we did go to Cairns to see the eclipse. The short version of the story is that we were clouded out. There was a persistent wind from the east (i.e., off the water) that kept conditions cloudy. To get away from that, we headed inland over the first range of hills and we got to an area north of Mareeba that was, in fact, only partly cloudy, but the cloudy part was in the eastern sky and since the eclipse was very early in the morning, that's where the sun was. Actually we did get a few glimpses of totality, but that was about it. I have a couple of pictures that are sort of dramatic with the eclipsed sun engulfed in boiling clouds, and I should post one here, but overall it was a disappointment.

Generally, conditions were very spotty. Had we picked a place a few miles to the south of where we were, we would have seen it -- we could see the sun shining over there! People at various locations either did or didn't see the eclipse depending on whether they happened to have a lucky hole in the clouds in the right place.

Our trip, however, was spectacular! We really enjoyed Australia and after that my wife and I continued to New Zealand, which we also enjoyed immensely. And while a lot of our nights were cloudy and/or spoiled by city lights, we did get one night of wonderful stargazing west of Cairns, which was very rewarding.

So sorry to hear about you being clouded out Bert. At least you did get a glimpse or two and I am glad that you enjoyed the rest of your trip. Also good to hear that you got to see some southern hemisphere night sky delights.
I have heard a lot of stories of hit and miss with the eclipse. A couple of friends drove for three days to get there and saw nothing, a few others had the clouds magically part right before totality. The best views were certainly inland. A couple more friends of mine picked up APOD's for there work from well inland of the coast.
